[Part I] Traveling Greece

Saturday, December 05, 2015

This summer I went to Greece for my honeymoon.  I didn't do typical honeymoon things but just planned it as I normally do with all my trips.  Since I was busy with wedding planning, I decided to go with a travel package that included 3 stops, hotels, and ferries and my husband did the research for the activities we wanted to do on each island.  I booked the Island Hopper tour with go-today since I've had a good experience with them for Italy (See post HERE).  So I'm going to share a bit about how we traveled and what we planned.

5/27 Day 2 - Arrived in Athens @ 9am
Hotel: Polis Grand
Thoughts - The streets of Athens are full of graffiti but it still felt safe enough.  The hotel was clean and was at a good location to the sights and train station.
We arrived at Athens 1 day later and jet-lagged but still spent the day exploring the historical sites since it was our only day in Athens on this trip.

TIPS: Buy the 12 euro ticket package that includes admission to 7 sites: Acropolis, Ancient Angora, Roman Angora, Kerameikos, Hadrian's Library, and Temple of Olympian Zeus, and Theater of Dionysos.

5/28 Day 3 - Took a ferry to Mykonos.
Hotel: Yiannaki
Thoughts - Hotel was nice and roomy and had a nice breezy balcony.  There was also a large outdoor pool that I didn't try out.  The hotel is walking distance to Ornos Beach and the local town.  Some nice restaurants in the area.  We had dinner at our hotel's restaurant on the first night, Aleka's Restaurant, which is highly rated on Yelp.

5/29 Day 4 - We booked a Beginners Scuba Diving lesson with GODIVE at Lia Beach.  The brought us to the dive location by shuttle.  The staff was really informative and friendly.
After that we took a bus to Mykonos Town.  Some notable things to see there are the Church of Paraporiani, Little Venice, and Mykonos Windmills and just strolling through Matoyianni St. for souvenirs.

5/30 Day 5 - If your also staying in this area, go to Ornos Beach early in the morning and buy a multi-trip water taxi ticket.  It starts at 10am and runs every hour until 1pm.  Ticket is about 6-7 euros.  You can visit several popular beaches on the coast.  It starts at Ornos and ends at Elia Beach.

TIPS: Bring cash!  Convert before you go if you can, to save on fees.  A lot of the restaurants and small shops don't take credit card.

My next post Part II will about my 3 Days in Santorini.  If you have any questions about the details of our trip feel free to leave a comment below.
